History of Cricket in Sri Lanka
Cricket has a long and cherished history in Sri Lanka, dating back to the early 19th century when it was introduced by the British during their colonial rule. The first recorded match took place in 1832, and by 1926, Sri Lanka had hosted its first-class cricket competition.
Sri Lanka’s love for the game grew rapidly, and in 1982, the island nation became a full member of the International Cricket Council (ICC) and started playing Test cricket. Since then, Sri Lanka has made its mark on the global cricketing stage, winning the 1996 Cricket World Cup and the 2014 ICC World Twenty20. Iconic players such as Muttiah Muralitharan, Kumar Sangakkara, Mahela Jayawardene, and Sanath Jayasuriya have not only shaped the history of Sri Lankan cricket but have become legends in the world of sport.
Cricket is deeply ingrained in Sri Lankan culture, with stadiums in Colombo, Galle, Kandy, and Hambantota hosting thrilling international matches. Whether you’re a passionate cricket fan or simply interested in learning more about Sri Lanka’s sporting heritage, the island offers a unique glimpse into its cricketing legacy.

Cricket Tours to Sri Lanka
Sri Lanka, once known as Ceylon, has long been a cherished destination for international cricket teams. The island’s rich cricketing history dates back to the late 19th century, when legendary teams began making stops on their journeys to far-off destinations.
In October 1882, Ivo Bligh’s England team played in Colombo, en route to Australia to recover “the Ashes.” A few years later, in 1890, the Australian team stopped in Sri Lanka on their way to England. The first Indian team to tour Sri Lanka was from Elphinstone College, Bombay, in 1903-04. The Marylebone Cricket Club (MCC) has also visited Sri Lanka numerous times, starting with their 1911-12 tour on their way to Australia.
One of the most iconic figures in cricket history, Sir Donald Bradman, visited Sri Lanka four times between 1930 and 1948 as part of Australia’s ‘whistle-stop’ tours to England. These early tours helped establish Sri Lanka as a key stop on the global cricket circuit.
Today, Sri Lanka continues to be a sought-after destination for cricket tours, thanks to its convenient international connections, world-class facilities, and welcoming, cricket-obsessed locals. Beyond cricket, the island offers a wealth of side activities, from thrilling adventures to rich cultural experiences, not to mention its famous cuisine.
Whether you’re a school team, amateur club, or professional squad, Sri Lanka promises an unforgettable cricketing experience with a perfect mix of sport, leisure, and hospitality.

Embracing our rich cultural heritage and the profound influence of Buddhism on Sri Lanka’s cultural fabric, Ceylon Roots proudly presents the ‘Buddhist Roots’ project.
The island’s connection to the teachings of The Buddha has shaped it’s identity and inspired the creation of temples and statues that embody our faith. However, the passage of time has left some of these rural temples in neglected states, depriving them of the rightful care they merit.
Our commitment:
With unwavering dedication, we have undertaken a vital commitment to revive and sustain temples island-wide. Through providing essential support for upkeep, nourishment, and sustainable living conditions, the aim of the Buddhist Roots project is to help ensure the lasting prosperity of these sacred sites.
By joining hands with us, you are not only contributing to their well-being, but also getting the chance to explore these sites and personally experience the rich authenticity of Sri Lankan Buddhism.
